Why does a ball stop rolling?

Teams roll the same ball down the same ramp onto a hard floor, a carpet and a towel, and measure how far it goes each time. They find out that a rolling ball doesn't just run out of go: something rubs against it and slows it down.

Read this to the class:

At recess, Sam kicked a ball across the blacktop and it rolled all the way to the fence. Later, Sam kicked it just as hard across the grass, and it stopped after a few steps. Sam's friend said, "The ball just got tired." Sam isn't sure that balls get tired. Your team's job: find out what makes a rolling ball stop.

Teams of three, with three jobs that rotate after every surface: Roller (lets the ball go), Marker (marks where it stops), Recorder (measures and writes the number).
