Grade 6ScienceEnergyLesson 3 of 3

Why don't we use solar power everywhere?

Students shine a flashlight onto grid paper at different angles and through 'clouds' to see why sunlight is weaker in winter, then compare day lengths for their own town. They weigh solar power's strengths and limits like an energy planner.

Read this to the class:

A city councillor says, "Sunshine is free. Let's cover every roof in town with solar panels and shut down the power plant." An engineer at the meeting smiles and says, "Solar is great. But it won't do everything, especially in December." The councillor wants to know why. Your team's job: find out what makes sunlight stronger or weaker, and advise the council.

Teams of three, with jobs that rotate after each test: Lead (holds the flashlight), Measurer (sets the angle and counts squares), Recorder (writes results).
