Grades 7–8ScienceChemical ReactionsLesson 1 of 3

Is it a new substance?

Teams run six quick kitchen changes, from dissolving sugar to curdling milk, and record properties before and after. They sort each change as physical or chemical using evidence, and find out why a single clue like bubbles or a colour change isn't proof on its own.

Read this to the class:

A new restaurant cook is learning from the chef. "Some things you do in a kitchen just change how food looks," says the chef, "like chopping or melting. Other things make something completely new, and you can't take them back." The cook asks how you can tell the difference without a laboratory. The chef shrugs. "I just know." Your team's job: find evidence that tells you when a brand-new substance has been made.

Teams of three, with three jobs that rotate after every two stations: Chemist (mixes and handles cups), Observer (checks colour, temperature, smell, texture), Recorder (fills in the table).
