Grades 7–8ScienceChemical ReactionsLesson 2 of 3

Where does the mass go?

Teams weigh baking soda and vinegar reacting in an open cup, then in a capped pop bottle. The open cup gets lighter and the capped bottle doesn't, until they open it. Students use atoms to explain why mass is never lost in a reaction, only let out.

Read this to the class:

A Grade 7 student baked muffins and weighed the batter before it went in the oven. When the muffins came out, they weighed less. Her little brother said, "The oven destroyed some of the muffin." She said that couldn't be right, but she couldn't say where the missing grams went. Your team's job: find out whether a chemical reaction can really destroy mass, or whether it just goes somewhere.

Teams of three, with three jobs that rotate between Part A and Part B: Chemist (mixes and caps), Scale reader (zeroes and reads the scale), Recorder (writes every mass).
