What can light go through?

Pairs shine a flashlight through everyday materials, from plastic wrap and wax paper to foil and cardboard, and sort them into 'lots of light', 'a little light' and 'no light'. Then they use what they found to choose the right material for a window, a lamp shade and a curtain for a sleepy bear.

Read this to the class:

Bear has a little house made from a shoebox. Bear has a problem. In the daytime, Bear wants a window that lets the sunshine in so the house is bright. But at bedtime, Bear wants a curtain that keeps the light out so it's dark enough to sleep. Bear doesn't know what to make them from. Your job: test materials with a flashlight and find the best window and the best curtain for Bear.

Children work in pairs. There are two jobs that swap after every two materials: the Shiner holds the flashlight, and the Holder holds the material in front of the wall and says what they see.
