Why is my shadow long in the morning?

Pairs stand a bottle on a chalk X and trace its shadow three times in one sunny day, measuring each shadow with a piece of yarn. Back inside, a flashlight held low and then high shows them why shadows are long when the Sun is low in the sky and short when it is high.

Read this to the class:

Every morning, Ava walks her dog before school. Her shadow is so long it stretches right across the road, like a giant. When she walks home for lunch, her shadow is small and stubby, right under her feet. "Is my shadow growing and shrinking?" she asks. Your job: watch one shadow all day long and find out why it changes.

Children work in pairs. There are two jobs that swap at each visit: the Tracer draws around the shadow with chalk, and the Measurer cuts a piece of yarn the same length as the shadow.
