Back-to-School Science: A First-Week Plan That Sets Up the Whole Year

By Ahmed, founder

The first week of school sets the tone for science. Spend it on routines, safety and curiosity, and the rest of the year will run more smoothly.

Day 1: what is science?

Start with questions, not definitions. Ask students to write or draw one thing they wonder about. Collect them on a question wall and return to it all year. Then ask: “How could we find out?” That’s science.

Day 2: a quick investigation

Run a ten-minute experiment that needs almost no equipment, such as the ruler-drop reaction test. Students predict, test, record and compare. See the ruler-drop experiment. It teaches measurement, repetition and sharing data in one go.

Day 3: safety and expectations

Co-create a science agreement:

  • Follow instructions, and ask if you’re unsure.
  • Wear goggles when told.
  • Don’t taste or smell anything unless the teacher says so.
  • Tie back hair, tuck in loose clothing.
  • Tell an adult about spills or accidents straight away.
  • Clean up your area.

Have students sign it, and post it. Practise the routines: collecting materials, working in teams and stopping on a signal.

Day 4: team jobs and talk

Introduce team roles that rotate (for example materials manager, recorder and reporter), so every student has a job. Practise a short experiment with roles. Teach sentence starters for science talk: “I predict… because…”, “I noticed…”, “I agree/disagree because…”.

Day 5: set up notebooks

Teach the notebook format (question, prediction, method, results, explanation), and have students make their first entry. See how to set up science notebooks.

Tips

  • Keep it hands-on early. Students decide in the first week whether science is something they do or something they hear about.
  • Praise careful observation, not just right answers.
  • Collect materials ahead of time, and keep a labelled bin per team.
  • Southern Hemisphere: the same plan works at the start of the school year in January or February.
