CAPS Maths Practice at Home: A Guide for South African Parents
By Fieldbook Learning
Maths in South African schools follows CAPS, the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement. It is organised in phases, and each one builds on the last.
The phases
- Foundation Phase (Grade R to Grade 3): counting, number sense to 1,000, adding and subtracting, early multiplication and sharing, money, time and measurement.
- Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 to 6): whole numbers to the millions, multiplication and long division, common fractions and decimals, measurement, data and patterns.
- Senior Phase (Grades 7 to 9): integers, exponents, algebraic expressions and equations, geometry and data handling.

- Read a passage from reading for South Africa, including the springbok and Allan Cormack, the South African who worked out the mathematics behind CT scans.
Every skill is scored from 0 to 100 and every miss is explained. My progress shows what your child has mastered.
