Maths Practice at Home, Foundation to Year 6: A Guide for Australian Families
By Fieldbook Learning
Primary maths in Australia follows the Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0), or a state syllabus built on it. The big ideas build steadily from Foundation to Year 6, and short, regular practice at home helps them stick.
How the years build
- Foundation to Year 2: counting and place value, adding and subtracting, early multiplication as equal groups, halves and quarters, time and money.
- Years 3 and 4: multiplication facts, larger numbers, fractions and decimals, measurement, and reading data.
- Years 5 and 6: multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages, angles, the coordinate plane and chance.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN numeracy tests run in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. They reward number sense and reading a problem carefully more than speed alone, so mix calculation practice with word problems and data questions.
Ten minutes a day
