Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the effect of a force (a push or a pull) in the movement of an object (changes in speed and direction). a. Plan and carry out an investigation to demonstrate how pushing and pulling on an object affects the motion of the object. b. Design a device to change the speed or direction of an object. c. Record and analyze data to decide if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a force (a push or a pull).

The Georgia Standards of Excellence, Science outcome S2P2 (Physical Science) for Grade 2 says: “Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the effect of a force (a push or a pull) in the movement of an object (changes in speed and direction). a. Egg drops, paper planes and balloon rockets, done properly at home. Three engineering challenges where kids build, test, fix and explain the pushes and pulls behind what happened.

  • How does a rocket push itself into space? 45 min

Kids build a balloon rocket that zooms along a string between two chairs, then run a fair test on how much air goes in the balloon. They finish able to explain action and reaction: the balloon pushes air back, and the air pushes the balloon forward.
