Read this aloud:

A scientist has found a strange goo. When she hits it with a spoon, it's hard as a rock. When she lets the spoon rest on it, the spoon slowly sinks right in. Her notebook has two labels, SOLID and LIQUID, and she can't decide which one to write. Your job: test the goo and decide. Is it a solid, a liquid, or something stranger?

Jobs for one, two or three kids:

  • Mixer: adds the water and stirs.
  • Tester: pokes, slaps and squeezes the goo.
  • Recorder: marks what happened on the sheet (a grown-up can write for little ones).

Swap jobs for each test so everyone gets their hands in.
