Cover page of Grade 4 Ontario Math: Financial Literacy

This unit covers every expectation in the Grade 4 Financial Literacy strand of the 2020 Ontario math curriculum, F1.1 to F1.5, and picks up where the Grades 1 to 3 coin-counting work leaves off. Students learn the ways people pay today, from cash and cheques to tapping a phone, e-transfers, barter and cryptocurrency, and talk about which way suits which situation. They then build the whole-dollar mental math the expectation asks for: estimating a total, adding prices in their heads, counting up to find the change and choosing the bills and coins to hand back.

A sports-swap class store gives every student a budget and a price list to shop from. Reading pages and activities on earning, spending, saving, investing and donating lead to a saving plan that shows how spending now changes how long a goal takes, and a comparison of four places to buy the same soccer ball teaches students to look past the price tag at shipping, quality, reviews and advertising.

Two practice pages are generated, so every answer in their key has been computed and checked a second way. The teacher notes give a six-lesson order, materials, differentiation, the common mistakes for each expectation and a map from each expectation to its pages. An end-of-strand check and a fully worked answer key finish the unit. The free sample is the teacher notes and the whole-dollar mental math page.
