Nine pages for Ontario’s Grade 4 expectation on classifying rocks and minerals. Students learn what a mineral is and how rocks are built from minerals, then sort rocks into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. They use real tests (streak, lustre, magnetism, hardness and the vinegar fizz test) to identify mystery minerals.
The examples are Canadian: the 4-billion-year-old Acasta Gneiss, the fossils of the Burgess Shale, the Canadian Shield and Ontario’s official mineral, amethyst. The hands-on investigation works with any bag of schoolyard rocks. Teacher notes, a quiz and a full answer key are included.
