Cover page of Grade 5 Ontario Math: Financial Literacy

This unit covers every expectation in the Grade 5 Financial Literacy strand of the 2020 Ontario math curriculum, F1.1 to F1.6. Students learn the many ways money moves today, from cash and cards to bank drafts, e-Transfers, wire transfers and automatic payments, and decide which way suits which situation. They then move from Grade 4’s whole dollars to dollars and cents: estimating totals, adding Ontario’s real 13% HST, rounding cash totals to the nearest 5 cents and counting up for change.

A summer budget and a class craft sale with a $100 charity goal show students how to plan earnings and spending and adjust when plans change. A page on credit and debt uses a payment plan and a family loan to show how borrowing affects later choices. Students find unit rates for groceries, bike rentals, swimming lessons and phone data to spot the best value, and ask whether the best value is always the best buy. The unit ends with the taxes collected by the federal, provincial and municipal governments and the services they pay for, from hospitals to snow plowing.

Two practice pages are generated, so every answer in their key has been computed and checked a second way. The teacher notes give a seven-lesson order, materials, differentiation, the common mistakes for each expectation, sources for the tax facts, and a map from each expectation to its pages. An end-of-strand check and a fully worked answer key finish the unit. All prices and people on student pages are made up. The free sample is the teacher notes and the dollars-and-cents practice page.
