Meet the Roadrunner

The roadrunner is a bird. It lives in deserts and dry scrubland in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Its home is hot and dry.

The roadrunner eats lizards, insects and snakes. It would rather run than fly, and flies only in short bursts.

The roadrunner has long, strong legs. These let it run about 30 kilometers an hour. It is about 55 centimeters long, including its tail.

Baby roadrunners are called chicks. Chicks can leave the nest and catch their own food at about three weeks old.
