Why Leaves Change Color

In summer, most tree leaves are green. They get their color from chlorophyll, a green material that helps leaves make food from sunlight.

Leaves also hold yellow and orange colors all summer long. You can't see them, because there is so much green chlorophyll covering them up.

In autumn, the days get shorter and cooler. Trees stop making chlorophyll, and the green slowly fades away. Now the hidden yellow and orange colors show through.

Some trees, like red maples, also make new red colors in autumn. Bright, sunny days and cool nights make the reds even stronger. That is why some autumns are more colorful than others.
