The Pulley

A simple machine makes work easier by changing how much force you need or which way you push. The pulley is one of six simple machines.

A pulley is a wheel with a groove that holds a rope or cable. Pulling down on the rope lifts the load up. Using two or more pulleys together means you pull with less force, though you pull the rope farther.

You can find pulleys all around you: a flagpole, a window blind and a construction crane. A single fixed pulley doesn't make a load lighter, but it lets you pull down to lift up, which is easier.

(Load: the object a machine moves or lifts.)
