The Wheel and Axle

A simple machine makes work easier by changing how much force you need or which way you push. The wheel and axle is one of six simple machines.

A wheel and axle is a wheel joined to a rod, called an axle, so they turn together. Turning the big wheel a long way turns the small axle a short way with more force, or turning the axle makes the wheel's edge move fast.

You can find wheel and axles all around you: a doorknob, a steering wheel and a screwdriver handle. A doorknob is a wheel and axle: turning the knob turns the rod that pulls the latch.

(Axle: the rod at the center of a wheel that turns with it.)
