7.RP.A.2 lessons
Recognize and represent proportional relationships: test for equivalent ratios in a table or a straight-line graph through the origin, identify the constant of proportionality, represent the relationship with an equation, and explain what a point (x, y) and the point (1, r) mean.
The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics code 7.RP.A.2 asks students to: “Recognize and represent proportional relationships: test for equivalent ratios in a table or a straight-line graph through the origin, identify the constant of proportionality, represent the relationship with an equation, and explain what a point (x, y) and the point (1, r) mean.” These Fieldbook lesson teaches it hands-on, with everyday materials, a printable teacher guide and a student sheet.
Mix It, Pace It: Ratio, Rate and Percent Grades 6–7
- Does twice the time mean twice the distance? 50–60 min
A walker moves at a steady pace while teammates mark where they are every 5 seconds, then the class graphs distance against time. A steady walker's points make a straight line through zero, but a walker with a head start doesn't. Students identify proportional relationships from tables and graphs, find the constant of proportionality and write it as an equation.
