How to Make a Shadow Clock

Goal: Use the Sun's shadow to tell the time.

You will need: a stick, a sunny patch of ground, small stones and a watch.

Step 1. Push the stick straight up into the ground in a sunny spot.

Step 2. At the start of an hour, put a stone at the tip of the shadow.

Step 3. Write the time next to the stone, or remember it.

Step 4. Mark the shadow's tip again every hour.

Step 5. The next sunny day, read the time from where the shadow falls.

Tip: The shadow is shortest around midday, when the Sun is highest.
