The emperor penguin makes its home in the ice and cold seas of Antarctica. This bird is about 1.1 meters tall. Living there is not easy, but the emperor penguin's body and habits are a good match for it.
One reason the emperor penguin survives is tightly packed, waterproof feathers, which trap warm air and keep out icy water. (Waterproof means able to keep water out.) It also has flippers instead of flying wings, which help it swim fast and dive deep.
The emperor penguin is a carnivore, which means it is an animal that eats other animals. Its food includes fish, squid and krill. To find food, it huddles in huge groups to share warmth during winter storms.
Young emperor penguins are called chicks. The father keeps the egg warm on his feet for about two months while the mother hunts at sea. Emperor penguins can dive deeper than 500 meters to find food.
