Katherine Johnson was born in 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Today she is remembered for calculating the paths of early American spaceflights.
Johnson was brilliant. She finished high school at 14 and college at 18.
In 1953, Johnson began working as a mathematician at the agency that later became NASA. Then, in 1961, Johnson calculated the flight path for the first American in space. Later, in 1962, Johnson checked the computer's numbers for John Glenn's orbit around Earth.
In 1969, Johnson helped calculate the path of the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon. Later, in 2015, Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. (Orbit: the curved path an object takes around a planet or star.)
Johnson died in 2020. Her story became widely known through the book and film Hidden Figures.
