Mae Jemison was born in 1956 in Decatur, Alabama. Today she is remembered for becoming the first African American woman to travel to space.
Jemison was ambitious. As a child in Chicago she was sure she would one day go to space.
In 1981, Jemison earned her medical degree. In 1983, Jemison began serving as a doctor in the Peace Corps in West Africa. Then, in 1987, Jemison was selected to train as a NASA astronaut.
Then, in 1992, Jemison flew into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. In 1993, Jemison founded a company to bring science and technology to daily life. (Astronaut: a person trained to travel into space.)
She encourages young people to study science, technology and the arts together.
