Is a Tomato a Fruit? What Scientists Say (and a Taste-Free Sorting Activity)

By Ahmed, founder

“Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?” is one of the best arguments in the kitchen, and the honest answer is: it depends who’s asking. A cook and a botanist use different rules, and noticing that is real science.

The two rules

The cook’s rule: by taste and use. Sweet things go in dessert (fruit). Savoury things go in dinner (vegetable).

The botanist’s rule: by how the plant makes it. A fruit is the part of a flowering plant that grows from the flower and holds the seeds. Everything else (roots, stems, leaves) isn’t a fruit.

Under the botanist’s rule, a tomato is a fruit. So are cucumbers, peppers, courgettes (zucchini), pumpkins, aubergines and, yes, peas in their pods and olives.

Sorting activity

You need: a mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet bell peppers (never chilli peppers), courgettes, apples, carrots, celery, lettuce, potatoes and a banana, plus a knife (adult) and a tray.

  1. Predict: which of these are fruits? Write guesses.
  2. A grown-up cuts each food open. Where are the seeds?
  3. Apply the botanist’s rule: does it grow from a flower and contain seeds?
  4. Sort into two piles: fruit and not fruit.

Surprises:

  • A carrot is a root, and celery is a stem.
  • Lettuce is a leaf.
  • A potato is a stem that grows underground (a tuber).
  • A banana is a fruit with almost no seeds, because commercial bananas have been bred that way.

Follow a flower into a fruit

Look at a flower with a magnifier. The part in the centre, called the ovary, holds tiny egg cells. When pollen reaches them, they turn into seeds, and the ovary swells into the fruit around the seeds. Fruit exists to protect seeds and help spread them: animals eat the fruit and carry the seeds away.

Our lesson Is a tomato a fruit? does this with thirteen foods and ends with students following a flower into a fruit. It follows What is a flower really for? and leads to How can a seed travel without legs?

Why this matters

It’s an easy example of a word meaning different things in different fields. Science often needs more careful definitions than everyday life, and a good habit is to ask “which meaning of the word are we using?”

Safety

Adults do the cutting. Check for food allergies before anyone tastes. Don’t taste anything in a science activity unless it’s clearly food prepared for eating, and never wild plants.
