Is summer when Earth is closest to the Sun?

Teams test the most popular explanation of the seasons against real 2026 orbit distances and thirty-year temperature averages from five cities in both hemispheres, then walk a human orbit with a tilted Earth. They find that Earth is closest to the Sun in January and explain the seasons with tilt instead.

Read this to the class:

On 3 January 2026, Mia in Sydney video-called her cousin Josh in London. Mia was back from the beach, where it was 27 °C. In London the Sun had set just after four in the afternoon. "Guess what?" said Josh. "My teacher says today Earth is at its closest to the Sun all year." Mia laughed. "Then why are you freezing?" Your team's job: test the idea that summer is when Earth is closest to the Sun, and find a better explanation if it fails.

Teams of three, with jobs that rotate between Part A and Part B: Reader (reads the cards aloud), Recorder (fills in the sheet) and Skeptic (asks "how do we know?").
