The salmon is a fish. It lives in the oceans and the rivers that flow into them. Its home is near fresh water.
The salmon eats insects, shrimp and small fish. It swims back to the stream where it hatched to lay its eggs.
The salmon has a strong, muscular body. This lets it swim upstream and leap up waterfalls. It is about 70 centimeters long for many kinds.
Baby salmon are called fry. Young salmon stay in rivers for months or years before swimming out to sea.
