Every night at sunset, Mira climbed the 112 steps of the Cape Hollow lighthouse to light the lamp. A thin grey cat named Fog followed her up, stopping on every tenth step as if he were counting.
One stormy night, the lamp would not light. Rain hammered the glass, and the wind howled. Mira dug through drawers, looking for new matches, while Fog sat by the small window and stared at the sea. His tail swished back and forth.
"Not now, Fog," Mira said. But Fog meowed loudly and pressed his nose to the glass. Mira finally looked. Out in the dark, a fishing boat was drifting toward the sharp rocks.
Mira grabbed her flashlight and flashed it through the window, again and again. Slowly, the boat turned away from the rocks. The next morning, the crew brought Fog a fresh fish.
