The gorilla makes its home in tropical rainforests in central Africa. This mammal is up to 1.8 meters tall when standing. Living there is not easy, but the gorilla's body and habits are a good match for it.
One reason the gorilla survives is long, strong arms, which help it climb and walk on its knuckles. It also has hands with thumbs that can grip, which let it peel stems and hold food.
The gorilla is a herbivore, which means it is an animal that eats only plants. Its food includes leaves, stems and fruit. To find food, it lives in a group led by a large adult male called a silverback.
Young gorillas are called infants. An infant rides on its mother's back until it is about three years old. Gorillas build a fresh nest of leaves to sleep in almost every night.
