How the Sloth Survives

The sloth makes its home in the rainforests of Central and South America. This mammal is about 60 centimeters long. Life in such a place is hard, but the sloth's body and habits are a good match for it.

One reason the sloth survives is long, hooked claws, which let it hang from branches for hours without tiring. It also has fur where tiny green algae grow, which helps it blend in with the leaves.

The sloth is a herbivore, which means it is an animal that eats only plants. Its food includes leaves, buds and fruit. To find food, it moves so slowly that it travels only about 40 meters in a day.

A baby clings to its mother's belly for about six months. Sloths come down from the trees only about once a week.
