Mary Anning was born in 1799 in Lyme Regis, England. Today she is remembered for finding some of the most important fossils ever discovered.
Anning was observant. She searched the crumbling cliffs after every storm, spotting bones others walked past.
In 1812, Anning uncovered the rest of the first ichthyosaur skeleton to be recognized. In 1823, Anning found the first complete plesiosaur skeleton.
In 1828, Anning found the first pterosaur skeleton in Britain. (Fossil: the remains or traces of a living thing from long ago, preserved in rock.)
Anning died in 1847. Her finds helped scientists understand that some animals had become extinct.
