Mars: the Fourth Planet

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It is a rocky planet, with a hard surface you could stand on.

One year on Mars, the time it takes to travel once around the Sun, lasts 687 Earth days. Planets farther from the Sun have longer orbits, so their years are longer.

Mars is known for red, rusty dust. Its soil contains iron that has rusted, which makes the planet look red.

The temperature on Mars is about minus 60 degrees Celsius on average. Mars has Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano in the solar system. (Volcano: an opening in a planet's surface where melted rock comes out.)
