Few people change how the world thinks, but Fiona Wood, born in 1958 in Yorkshire, England, did exactly that. She is remembered for developing spray-on skin to help burns heal.
Wood was inventive. She looked for a faster way to cover burns so that patients would heal with fewer scars.
In 1987, Wood moved to Western Australia to work as a surgeon. In 2002, Wood led the team treating burns patients after the Bali bombings.
In 2005, Wood was named Australian of the Year. (Burn: an injury to the skin caused by heat, chemicals or electricity.)
Burns units around the world now use spray-on skin cells.
