Few people change how the world thinks, but Mae Jemison, born in 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, did exactly that. She is remembered for becoming the first African American woman to travel to space.
Jemison was ambitious. As a child in Chicago she was sure she would one day go to space.
In 1981, Jemison earned her medical degree. In 1983, Jemison began serving as a doctor in the Peace Corps in West Africa. Later, in 1987, Jemison was selected to train as a NASA astronaut.
Later, in 1992, Jemison flew into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. Then, in 1993, Jemison founded a company to bring science and technology to daily life. (Astronaut: a person trained to travel into space.)
She encourages young people to study science, technology and the arts together.
