Wangari Maathai: How One Life Changed the World

Few people change how the world thinks, but Wangari Maathai, born in 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya, did exactly that. She is remembered for starting a movement that planted millions of trees.

In 1971, Maathai became the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate. In 1977, Maathai started the Green Belt Movement to plant trees.

In 2004, Maathai became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. (Erosion: the wearing away of soil or rock by wind or water.)
