2-LS4-1 lessons
Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. (A Grade 2 expectation; students compare two microhabitats in one schoolyard, so the unit builds toward comparing whole habitats.)
The Next Generation Science Standards code 2-LS4-1 asks students to: “Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. (A Grade 2 expectation; students compare two microhabitats in one schoolyard, so the unit builds toward comparing whole habitats.)” These Fieldbook lessons teach it hands-on, with everyday materials, a printable teacher guide and a student sheet.
Who Lives Here? Grades 3–4 · partly supports this standard
- Who lives in our schoolyard? 45–60 min
Teams lay a 1 m square of string in two different spots in the schoolyard and count every kind of living thing they can find, without touching or taking anything. They sort what they find into living, once living and never alive, and compare the two spots.
- Who can live here, and who can't? 45–60 min
Teams compare what lives under a board with what lives on the bare ground beside it, and feel which is damper. Then they judge six animals against the schoolyard's food, water and shelter, and argue with evidence which can live here well, which less well and which not at all.
NGSS is used as written in Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, so the code 2-LS4-1 matches there. Other states word and number their own versions: see curriculum alignment for your state's codes.
