Meet the Beaver

The beaver is a mammal. It lives in rivers, streams and ponds in North America and Europe. This place is near fresh water.

The beaver eats tree bark, twigs and water plants. It builds dams of sticks and mud that turn streams into ponds.

The beaver has large orange front teeth that never stop growing. These let it chew through tree trunks. It is about 1 meter long, including its tail.

Baby beavers are called kits. Kits can swim within a day of being born but stay with their family for about two years.
