Your lungs are part of your respiratory system. Their job is simple but important: they take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.
A dome-shaped muscle called the diaphragm pulls down to draw air in, then relaxes to push it out. Every cell in your body needs oxygen to make energy.
Your two lungs are not the same size: the left one is a little smaller to make room for your heart. (Oxygen: a gas in the air that the body needs to live.)
Clean air and exercise keep the lungs healthy; smoke harms them.
