Wide and open places are hard to live in, yet both the African elephant and the kangaroo manage it. They solve the same problem in different ways.
The African elephant lives in grasslands and forests in Africa. It is up to 4 meters tall at the shoulder. It has a long trunk with more than 40,000 muscles, which lets it grab food, drink water and greet other elephants. It is a herbivore and eats grasses, leaves, bark and fruit.
The kangaroo, by contrast, lives in grasslands and open forests across Australia. It is up to 2 meters tall when standing. It has powerful back legs, which let it hop more than 50 kilometers an hour. It is a herbivore and eats grasses and leaves.
Both animals show that there is more than one way to survive in a wide and open place.
