Wangari Maathai was born in 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya. Today she is remembered for starting a movement that planted millions of trees.
Maathai was courageous. She kept protecting forests even when powerful people tried to stop her.
In 1971, Maathai became the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate. In 1977, Maathai started the Green Belt Movement to plant trees.
Then, in 2004, Maathai became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. (Erosion: the wearing away of soil or rock by wind or water.)
Maathai died in 2011. The Green Belt Movement has planted more than 50 million trees in Kenya.
