Fraction Wall

Stack fraction strips to see which fractions are equal, which is bigger, and how they add up. Then test yourself with compare-and-match challenges.

How to use it

The top row is one whole. Each row below cuts the same whole into equal parts: halves, thirds, quarters and so on. Choose which rows to show, then click strips to shade. A dashed line drops from the end of the shading you just made, and every row that lines up exactly with it is outlined, with the equal fractions listed under the wall.

Compare and add draws any two fractions as bars, says which is bigger and adds them. The two challenges keep score: pick the bigger fraction, or type a fraction equal to the one shown.

The math: same size, different names

Every row is the same length, so a fraction's strip length is its size. When 2 quarters line up exactly with 1 half, the two fractions name the same amount: they are equivalent. Multiplying the top and bottom by the same number cuts each piece into smaller, equal pieces without changing the amount (1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 6/12).

To compare or add fractions with different denominators, rename both with a common denominator. To compare 3/4 and 2/3, use twelfths: 9/12 is more than 8/12. To add them, 9/12 + 8/12 = 17/12, which is one whole and 5/12 more. The wall shows why this works: twelfths line up with both quarters and thirds.

  • Which row has no equal fraction to 1/2? Why can fifths never line up with halves?
  • Is 1/7 or 1/8 bigger? What happens to the size of each piece as the denominator grows?
  • Find three ways to make 2/3 on the wall.
