Nova Scotia Science curriculum. Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Physical Science: Simple and compound machines
Outcome Learners will construct effective simple and compound machines, exploring motion and the forces causing motion and testing how effective a machine is and how to improve it (an adjacent-grade match: the build, test and improve cycle).
Lessons: Build It, Launch It (Can you drop an egg without breaking it?, What makes a paper plane fly farthest?, How does a rocket push itself into space?)
Earth and Space Science: Weather
Outcome Learners will investigate weather, including how water moves within the atmosphere (the water cycle). The cloud lesson is a partial match.
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?)
Outcome Learners will investigate weather, including the water cycle (an adjacent-grade match: window water bags).
Lessons: Our Living Planet (Can a jar keep itself alive?, Where does rain come from?)
Outcome Learners will investigate weather: measure weather conditions using instruments, and investigate the water cycle.
Lessons: Weather Detectives (Why does a chinook feel like spring in January?, Is it hotter by the slide?, Why do farmers care about the last frost?)
Outcome Learners will investigate how weather impacts daily life, including the effects of weather on living and non-living things (partial: frost and growing season).
Lessons: Weather Detectives (Why does a chinook feel like spring in January?, Is it hotter by the slide?, Why do farmers care about the last frost?)
Physical Science: Matter
Outcome Learners will test how physical and chemical changes affect the properties of matter, including how substances can be changed through reactions and conservation of mass (an adjacent-grade match for the volcano and secret-message lessons).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry for Families
Outcome Learners will test how physical and chemical changes affect the properties of matter, including how dissolving happens and how physical changes can be reversed (partial: salt dissolving in meltwater).
Lessons: Winter Science at Home (Can you make frost in a can?, Why does salt melt ice?, What's inside a snowflake?)
Outcome Learners will test how physical and chemical changes affect the properties of matter, including how physical changes can be reversed and conservation of mass (partial: evaporation and freezing).
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Outcome Learners will test how physical and chemical changes affect the properties of matter, including conservation of mass in physical and chemical changes (a lower-grade match).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
