Matter and energy
8.6(D) Compare and contrast the properties of acids and bases. The secret-message lesson sorts substances by how grape juice or turmeric changes colour (an early, non-numeric start on a Grade 8 outcome; pH is not covered).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry for Families · Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry workbook
8.6(E) Investigate how mass is conserved in chemical reactions and relate it to the rearrangement of atoms.
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry workbook
Force, motion, and energy
8.7(B) Investigate and describe how Newton's three laws of motion act simultaneously within systems such as vehicle restraints. Seatbelt and crumple zone lessons.
Organisms and environments
8.13(A) Identify the function of the cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus and other cell parts. The diffusion lesson covers what a membrane controls (partial).
Lessons: Cells: The Smallest Living Things
8.13(B) Describe the function of genes within chromosomes in determining inherited traits (an early, partial start via the strawberry DNA extraction).
