Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Science. Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Matter and energy
5.6(A) Compare and contrast matter based on measurable properties, including relative density (sinking and floating) and volume. Water and ice weigh the same but ice takes more space and floats.
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Clean Water Challenge: Mixtures, Dissolving and Separating workbook · Grade 4 Rocks and Minerals
5.6(C) Compare the properties of substances before and after they are combined into a solution and demonstrate that matter is conserved in solutions. The crystal lesson uses salt solutions and watches the dissolved solid come back as the water leaves (partial).
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?) · Winter Science at Home (Can you make frost in a can?, Why does salt melt ice?, What's inside a snowflake?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook
5.6(D) Illustrate how matter is made up of particles that are too small to be seen. Evaporation and ice floating are explained with particles.
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Earth and Sky at Home workbook · Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Winter Science at Home workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
Force, motion, and energy
5.7(A) Investigate and explain how equal and unequal forces acting on an object cause patterns of motion and transfer of energy. Covered through the balloon rocket and paper plane explanations (partial).
Lessons: Build It, Launch It (Can you drop an egg without breaking it?, What makes a paper plane fly farthest?, How does a rocket push itself into space?)
Practice: Build It, Launch It workbook · Pushes, Pulls and Magnets workbook · Forces at Work: Gravity, Resistance, Levers and Pulleys workbook
5.7(B) Design a simple experimental investigation that tests the effect of force on an object in a system, such as a balloon rocket on a string. Kids run exactly this fair test by changing how much air goes in the balloon.
Lessons: Build It, Launch It (Can you drop an egg without breaking it?, What makes a paper plane fly farthest?, How does a rocket push itself into space?)
Practice: Build It, Launch It workbook · Pushes, Pulls and Magnets workbook · Forces at Work: Gravity, Resistance, Levers and Pulleys workbook · Evidence Lab workbook · How Your Body Works workbook · Keep It Cool: Ice, Insulation and Staying Comfortable workbook · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm workbook · Think Like a Scientist: The Scientific Method workbook · Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook · Monsoon Science: Rain, Sun and the Nón Lá workbook
5.8(A) Investigate and describe the transformation of energy in systems. The paper wind machine turns wind energy into lifting a load (a lower-grade match).
Lessons: Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From (Where does our classroom's electricity come from?, Can the wind power our school?, Why don't we use solar power everywhere?)
Practice: Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From workbook · Simple Circuits: Make It Light Up workbook
5.8(B) Demonstrate that electrical energy in complete circuits can be transformed into motion, light, sound, or thermal energy and identify the requirements for a functioning circuit (an adjacent-grade match: bulb, buzzer and switch builds).
Lessons: Simple Circuits: Make It Light Up
Practice: Simple Circuits: Make It Light Up workbook · Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From workbook
5.8(C) Demonstrate and explain how light travels in a straight line and can be reflected, refracted, or absorbed. The rainbow lesson shows water bending white light apart into colours.
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?)
Practice: Grade 4 Light and Colour
Earth and space
5.9 Explain the appearance of the Sun moving across the sky, resulting in changes in shadow positions and shapes (an early start for the long-morning-shadow lesson).
Lessons: Light and Shadows (Why does my shadow follow me?, Why is my shadow long in the morning?, What can light go through?)
Practice: Light and Shadows workbook · Stars and the Night Sky workbook
5.10(C) Model and identify how changes to Earth's surface by wind, water, or ice result in the formation of landforms, including deltas, canyons, and sand dunes (an adjacent-grade match: the canyon stream table).
Lessons: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape
Practice: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
5.11 Design and explain solutions such as conservation, recycling, or proper disposal to minimize environmental impact of the use of natural resources. Students recommend one change after their waste, water and energy audits.
Lessons: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better
Practice: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better workbook · Our Changing Planet: Resources and Human Impact workbook
Organisms and environments
5.12(A) Observe and describe how a variety of organisms survive by interacting with biotic and abiotic factors in a healthy ecosystem. The schoolyard life count.
Lessons: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
Practice: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom? workbook · Our Living Planet workbook
5.12(B) Predict how changes in the ecosystem affect the cycling of matter and flow of energy in a food web. The wolves-disappear yarn activity.
Lessons: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
Practice: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom? workbook · Our Living Planet workbook
