Earth and Space Sciences
5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways communities reduce human impact on the Earth’s resources and environment by changing an agricultural, industrial, or community practice or process.
Lessons: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better (partly) · Our Changing Planet: Resources and Human Impact (How can a town use less and waste less?)
Practice: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better workbook · Our Changing Planet: Resources and Human Impact workbook
Physical Sciences
5-PS1-2 Measure and graph the weights (masses) of substances before and after a reaction or phase change to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or combining substances, the total weight (mass) of matter is conserved.
Lessons: Clean Water Challenge: Mixtures, Dissolving and Separating (Where does the salt go when it disappears in water?, How can you get fresh water out of salt water?) (partly) · Solids, Liquids and Gases (Why does ice float?)
Practice: Clean Water Challenge: Mixtures, Dissolving and Separating workbook · Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook
5-PS1-4 Conduct an experiment to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances with new properties (a chemical reaction) or not (a mixture).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry for Families (What makes a volcano erupt?, How do spies write secret messages?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook
5-PS2-1 Support an argument with evidence that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed toward Earth’s center.
Lessons: Forces at Work: Gravity, Resistance, Levers and Pulleys (Do heavy things really fall faster?) · The Solar System: Gravity, Orbits and Scale (What is each world like?) (partly)
Practice: Forces at Work: Gravity, Resistance, Levers and Pulleys workbook · The Solar System: Gravity, Orbits and Scale workbook
