Ontario Science and Technology, Grades 1–8. Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Life Systems
B2.1 Describe the basic needs of plants, including the need for air, water, light, heat, nutrients, and space, and identify environmental conditions that may threaten plant survival. (water, light and warmth for growth; an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Plants and Seeds: What Does a Seed Need? (What's inside a seed?, What does a seed need to grow?, Why do plants grow toward the window?)
Practice: Plants and Seeds: What Does a Seed Need? workbook · Who Eats What? Food Chains and Helpers workbook
B2.4 Describe ways in which a variety of plants adapt and/or react to their environment and to changes in their environment. (seedlings growing toward light; an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Plants and Seeds: What Does a Seed Need? (What's inside a seed?, What does a seed need to grow?, Why do plants grow toward the window?)
B2.5 Demonstrate an understanding that most plants get energy directly from the Sun through the process of photosynthesis, which involves the absorption of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen. (spinach disk lesson; a Grade 3 expectation taught at greater depth).
Lessons: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
Practice: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom? workbook
Matter and Energy
C2.1 Describe different types of contact forces and non-contact forces.
Lessons: Pushes, Pulls and Magnets (Why does a ball stop rolling?, Can a magnet work through a table?, How far will a paper clip jump?)
Practice: Pushes, Pulls and Magnets workbook
C2.3 Describe how different forces applied to an object, including forces of varying magnitude, can cause the object to start, stop, or change its direction, speed, or shape. (card-and-coin inertia demonstration; a Grade 3 expectation revisited).
Lessons: Build It, Launch It (Can you drop an egg without breaking it?, What makes a paper plane fly farthest?, How does a rocket push itself into space?) · Pushes, Pulls and Magnets (Why does a ball stop rolling?, Can a magnet work through a table?, How far will a paper clip jump?) · Forces and Motion: Crash, Push and Stop
Earth and Space Systems
E2.4 Explain the process of erosion, including its causes and its impact on soils. (stream table; a Grade 3 expectation).
Lessons: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape
Practice: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
E2.5 Identify various strategies used to maintain and improve soil health in Ontario. (model hillsides; a Grade 3 expectation).
Lessons: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape
Practice: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape workbook · Restless Earth: Fossils, Soils, Volcanoes and Plates workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
More outcomes
Outcome Strand C, Matter and Energy: Forces and Motion: investigate how forces, including friction and magnetism, make objects start moving, stop or change direction.
Lessons: Pushes, Pulls and Magnets (Why does a ball stop rolling?, Can a magnet work through a table?, How far will a paper clip jump?)
