Florida Grade 8 science standards
The Grade 8 science outcomes we teach, in the standards's own words, with the lessons and practice pages for each. Pick an outcome code for the full list of lessons and printables.
Florida's State Academic Standards for Science (NGSSS). Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Earth and Space Science
SC.8.E.5.9 Explain the impact of objects in space on each other including the Sun on the Earth including seasons (a later-grade, partial match: sunlight angle and day length).
Lessons: Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From (Where does our classroom's electricity come from?, Can the wind power our school?, Why don't we use solar power everywhere?)
Life Science
SC.8.L.18.1 Describe and investigate the process of photosynthesis, such as the roles of light, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll; production of food; release of oxygen (a later-grade match: the floating leaf disks show oxygen made in light).
Lessons: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
Practice: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom? workbook
Physical Science
SC.8.P.8.1 Explore the scientific theory of atoms by using models to explain the motion of particles in solids, liquids, and gases (an early start on a Grade 8 benchmark).
Lessons: Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move
SC.8.P.8.3 Explore and describe the densities of various materials through measurement of their masses and volumes (an early, informal start: water and ice have equal mass but different volume).
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Clean Water Challenge: Mixtures, Dissolving and Separating workbook · Grade 4 Rocks and Minerals
SC.8.P.8.8 Identify basic examples of and compare and classify the properties of compounds, including acids, bases, and salts. The secret-message lesson is an early, non-numeric start on this Grade 8 benchmark.
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry for Families · Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry workbook
SC.8.P.8.9 Distinguish among mixtures (including solutions) and pure substances (partial: dissolving sugar is one of six changes).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
SC.8.P.9.1 Explore the Law of Conservation of Mass by demonstrating that mass is conserved when substances undergo physical and chemical changes (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry workbook
SC.8.P.9.2 Differentiate between physical changes and chemical changes (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry workbook
