Florida's State Academic Standards for Science (NGSSS). Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Earth and Space Science
SC.3.E.6.1 Demonstrate that radiant energy from the Sun can heat objects and when the Sun is not present, heat may be lost (a lower-grade match: shade versus pavement).
Lessons: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better
Practice: Light and Shadows workbook · Groundhog Day Shadow Science
Life Science
SC.3.L.14.2 Investigate and describe how plants respond to stimuli (heat, light, gravity), such as plant stems growing toward light. The window and shoebox maze lessons (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Plants and Seeds: What Does a Seed Need? (What's inside a seed?, What does a seed need to grow?, Why do plants grow toward the window?)
SC.3.L.17.1 Describe how animals and plants respond to changing seasons (a lower-grade match: winter survival).
Lessons: Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm
Practice: Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm workbook · Flowers, Fruit and Seeds: How Plants Make More Plants workbook · How Your Body Works workbook · Keep It Cool: Ice, Insulation and Staying Comfortable workbook · Your Senses: How Does Your Body Know? workbook · Groundhog Day Shadow Science
SC.3.L.17.2 Recognize that plants use energy from the Sun, air, and water to make their own food (a lower-grade match; the sealed jar still needs light).
Lessons: Our Living Planet (Can a jar keep itself alive?, Where does rain come from?) · Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
Practice: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom? workbook
Nature of Science
SC.3.N.1.7 Explain that empirical evidence is information, such as observations or measurements, used to help validate explanations of natural phenomena (a lower-grade match).
Lessons: Evidence Lab (How do you know a fact is true?, Why do scientists repeat their tests?)
Practice: Evidence Lab workbook · Build It, Launch It workbook · How Your Body Works workbook · Keep It Cool: Ice, Insulation and Staying Comfortable workbook · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm workbook · Think Like a Scientist: The Scientific Method workbook · Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook · Monsoon Science: Rain, Sun and the Nón Lá workbook
Physical Science
SC.3.P.9.1 Describe the changes water undergoes when it changes state through heating and cooling, using terms such as melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation and condensation (a lower-grade match).
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?) · Winter Science at Home (Can you make frost in a can?, Why does salt melt ice?, What's inside a snowflake?) · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm · Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Earth and Sky at Home workbook · Winter Science at Home workbook
SC.3.P.10.3 Demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another (an adjacent-grade match: shadows).
Lessons: Light and Shadows (Why does my shadow follow me?, Why is my shadow long in the morning?, What can light go through?)
Practice: Light and Shadows workbook · Earth and Sky at Home workbook · Bouncing Light: Mirrors, Water and Colour workbook · Grade 4 Light and Colour
SC.3.P.10.4 Demonstrate that light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed (partial: sorting materials by how much light passes through).
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?) · Light and Shadows (Why does my shadow follow me?, Why is my shadow long in the morning?, What can light go through?)
Practice: Earth and Sky at Home workbook · Light and Shadows workbook · Bouncing Light: Mirrors, Water and Colour workbook · Grade 4 Light and Colour
