Nature of Science
SC.5.N.1.3 Recognize and explain the need for repeated experimental trials. Each plane is thrown three times and the results are averaged.
Lessons: Build It, Launch It (Can you drop an egg without breaking it?, What makes a paper plane fly farthest?, How does a rocket push itself into space?) · Evidence Lab (How do you know a fact is true?, Why do scientists repeat their tests?)
Practice: Build It, Launch It workbook · Evidence Lab workbook · How Your Body Works workbook · Keep It Cool: Ice, Insulation and Staying Comfortable workbook · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm workbook · Think Like a Scientist: The Scientific Method workbook · Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook · Monsoon Science: Rain, Sun and the Nón Lá workbook
SC.5.N.1.6 Recognize and explain the difference between personal opinion/interpretation and verified observation (a lower-grade match: rating chatbot, ad and forum claims).
Lessons: Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers (Does salt make water boil faster?, Is that AI answer true?, Which source should we trust?)
SC.5.N.2.1 Recognize and explain that science is grounded in empirical observations that are testable; explanation must always be linked with evidence (a lower-grade match).
Lessons: Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers (Does salt make water boil faster?, Is that AI answer true?, Which source should we trust?)
Practice: Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers workbook · Build It, Launch It workbook · Evidence Lab workbook · How Your Body Works workbook · Keep It Cool: Ice, Insulation and Staying Comfortable workbook · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm workbook · Think Like a Scientist: The Scientific Method workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook · Monsoon Science: Rain, Sun and the Nón Lá workbook
Physical Science
SC.5.P.8.1 Compare and contrast the basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases, such as mass, volume, colour, texture, and temperature. Water and ice have the same mass but different volume.
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Clean Water Challenge: Mixtures, Dissolving and Separating workbook · Grade 4 Rocks and Minerals
SC.5.P.8.2 Investigate and identify materials that will dissolve in water and the conditions that speed up or slow down dissolving. Salt, Epsom salt and sugar solutions for crystal growing (partial).
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Clean Water Challenge: Mixtures, Dissolving and Separating workbook · Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Grade 4 Rocks and Minerals
SC.5.P.8.4 Explore the scientific theory of atoms by recognizing that all matter is composed of parts too small to be seen without magnification. Evaporation is explained with particles (partial; atoms are not named).
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Earth and Sky at Home workbook · Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Winter Science at Home workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
SC.5.P.10.4 Investigate and explain that electrical energy can be transformed into heat, light, and sound energy (an adjacent-grade match: bulb, LED and buzzer).
