Florida's State Academic Standards for Science (NGSSS). Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Earth and Space Science
SC.2.E.7.1 Compare and describe changing patterns in nature that repeat themselves, such as weather conditions including temperature and precipitation, day to day and season to season.
Lessons: Weather Watchers: What Will the Sky Do Today? (What's the weather like today?, Which way is the wind blowing?, How much rain fell?)
Practice: Weather Watchers: What Will the Sky Do Today? workbook · Stars and the Night Sky workbook · Light and Shadows workbook
SC.2.E.7.2 Investigate by observing and measuring that the Sun's energy directly and indirectly warms the water, land, and air (a lower-grade match: sun and shade temperatures).
Lessons: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better
Practice: Light and Shadows workbook · Groundhog Day Shadow Science
SC.2.E.7.3 Investigate, observe and describe how water left in an open container evaporates, but water in a closed container does not (a lower-grade match: the puddle race and cup lesson).
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Earth and Sky at Home workbook · Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Winter Science at Home workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
SC.2.E.7.4 Investigate that air is all around us and that moving air is wind.
Lessons: Weather Watchers: What Will the Sky Do Today? (What's the weather like today?, Which way is the wind blowing?, How much rain fell?)
Practice: Weather Watchers: What Will the Sky Do Today? workbook
Life Science
SC.2.L.16.1 Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants, including beans. Children journal a bean's early growth (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Plants and Seeds: What Does a Seed Need? (What's inside a seed?, What does a seed need to grow?, Why do plants grow toward the window?)
Practice: Who Lives Here? workbook
Physical Science
SC.2.P.8.1 Observe and measure objects in terms of their properties, including sinking or floating in water (a lower-grade match for the lava-lamp lesson).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry for Families
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Test It, Choose It: Materials workbook
SC.2.P.8.3 Recognize that solids have a definite shape and that liquids and gases take the shape of their container. Oobleck acts like both (a lower-grade match).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry for Families
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Test It, Choose It: Materials workbook
SC.2.P.8.4 Observe and describe water in its solid, liquid, and gaseous states (a lower-grade match).
Lessons: Winter Science at Home (Can you make frost in a can?, Why does salt melt ice?, What's inside a snowflake?)
Practice: Winter Science at Home workbook
SC.2.P.8.5 Measure and compare temperatures taken every day at the same time (a lower-grade match for the schoolyard thermometer survey).
Lessons: Weather Detectives (Why does a chinook feel like spring in January?, Is it hotter by the slide?, Why do farmers care about the last frost?)
Practice: Weather Detectives workbook · Weather Watchers: What Will the Sky Do Today? workbook
SC.2.P.13.2 Demonstrate that magnets can be used to make some things move without touching them (a lower-grade match; the magnet gadget design).
Lessons: Pushes, Pulls and Magnets (Why does a ball stop rolling?, Can a magnet work through a table?, How far will a paper clip jump?)
Practice: Pushes, Pulls and Magnets workbook
SC.2.P.13.4 Demonstrate that the greater the force (push or pull) applied to an object, the greater the change in motion (the Grade 2 version of the same idea, used in the plane throws).
Lessons: Build It, Launch It (Can you drop an egg without breaking it?, What makes a paper plane fly farthest?, How does a rocket push itself into space?)
Practice: Build It, Launch It workbook
