Prince Edward Island Science curriculum. Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Earth and Space Science: Rocks, Minerals
ESS1 Identify the characteristics and relationships between rocks and minerals (an adjacent-grade match: scratch, streak and vinegar tests).
Earth and Space Science: Earth's Crust
ESS2 Explain how the Earth's crust undergoes gradual and sudden changes over time (partial: weathering and erosion).
Life Science: Interactions within Ecosystems
LS1 Explain how different parts of an ecosystem interact and affect each other, including the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Our Living Planet (Can a jar keep itself alive?, Where does rain come from?) · Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
LS2 Illustrate and analyse how food chains and food webs can be used to visualize the transfer of energy in an ecosystem (an adjacent-grade match; roles of producers, consumers and decomposers are in LS1).
Lessons: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
Life Science: Sustainability of Ecosystems
LS3 Propose actions to reduce the impact of human activities on a specific ecosystem (an adjacent-grade match).
Physical Science: Mixtures and Solutions
PS2 Describe the characteristics and applications of solutions (a later-grade, partial match: crystal solutions).
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?) · Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
Physical Science: Heat
PS4 Conduct experiments to describe the effect of heat on different forms of matter, including explaining temperature using the kinetic energy of particles (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?) · Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move
PS5 Explain how heat is transmitted by conduction, convection, and radiation in solids, liquids, and gases (an adjacent-grade match: mitten and snow-den insulation).
Lessons: Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm · Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move
PS6 Create a prototype of a device that will provide a solution to a practical heating or cooling problem (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm · Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move
